Pandora Pound, Community Acupuncture, Midsomer Norton (December 2007):
"It's really not a multi-bed clinic, just a slightly large room with two beds in it and just me!
I'm there once a week for an afternoon and evening and people book appointments, coming every half hour. I'm still charging a relatively high fee (£20/£15), but it has made it a lot more affordable for people round here, so they can come for longer and get more benefit. I've also found that they are much more likely to recommend you to people if the price is right. It feels good to be charging a lower fee and seeing all sorts of people coming in, from teenagers to people in their late eighties. It's my favourite clinic, very rewarding. The downside is having to set up the room each time and then clear it all away again - lots of work.
I also think my energy is better when I work like this, because I don't have to do so much chit chat, which can drain me. However, it can be a long, long afternoon with no breaks and it is just me, which is a bit scarey sometimes. Ideally I will find a bigger place and work alongside someone else. It's a bit isolated at the moment. I work in a natural health clinic so have reception cover until 5pm which is helpful. However, I'm still paying a lot of money for the room and would like to find somewhere cheaper, and a place that understands what I'm trying to achieve."
Alex Wood, Swansea Acupuncture Project (December 2007):
"I now see around 12-18 patients on a Tuesday at Connect and the clinic only started in March. Perhaps a third by donation/free while others pay £25/20 for a consultation and £15/10 a treatment. Experience wise this has been great;
I see a wider range of health complaints than ever before and treat people from all ends of the community. Both my wallet and my clinical knowledge have expanded!
The last six months has lead me to speculate that across the UK there may be a wide-angle of staff and clients within similar projects who are currently benefiting from auricular acupuncture and may be keen to have low cost acupuncture clinic as part of their service. Is this the way forward for more affordable acupuncture clinics?"
